# Pair the SCS Controller with a Gateway
## Follow these commissioning steps to make a 1-to-1 association between a SCS Controller and a Gateway with Field app.
#### Before you start
Follow these steps if:
- the OEM hasn't already made the 1-to-1 association between the SCS Controller and a Gateway during installation at their factory, OR
- if you are adding a Gateway to a cooler with an existing SCS Controller in the field.

#### 1 - Make sure you have the correct permissions and software
- You will need a [user role with permission to manage pairing](https://support.aofrio.com/enable-a-role-in-your-organization-to-use-field-app?hsLang=en) with other AoFrio hardware. This can be
granted through User Roles within AoFrio’s User Manager software.
- Your version of Field app must be version 5.28 or later. You can check the Field app version from the menu within the app and download the latest version if required.
- Your device must have an active internet connection to perform this configuration

#### 2 - Set up your hardware
**Gateway**
- Ensure you are in a location with a [clear cellular network signal](https://support.aofrio.com/about-cellular-iot-connectivity-for-aofrio-devices?hsLang=en)to set up and upload data to the Cloud.
- Make sure the Gateway is powered OFF when you start.
- Follow the [mounting instructions](https://support.aofrio.com/mount-a-scs-500-or-600-controller-in-a-commercial-refrigeration-cabinet?hsLang=en)
**SCS Controller**
- Power ON the Controller to start.
- The SCS Controller firmware must be FW version 4020 or later. [Find the current firmware version for your SCS Controller.](https://support.aofrio.com/find-the-current-firmware-version-for-your-scs-controller?hsLang=en)

#### 3 - Pair your SCS Controller with a Gateway
1. Open Field app and select the SCS Controller from the list of visible devices. Click **CONNECT**.
2. Open the main menu and select **SCS SETUP**.
3. Click **EDIT** in the row for **GATEWAY serial #**. Either:
- Type in the Gateway serial number OR
- Scan the QR code by clicking **SCAN BARCODE**.
4. Click **SAVE** to complete the configuration. You are ready to “power up” the Gateway. If it is already plugged in, unplug for at least 2 minutes then plug in again and “power on” for it to download the latest configuration.

#### Configuration troubleshooting
| **Issue reported** | **Possible solution** |
| --- | --- |
| **Internet Connection Required** | Check the Internet connection on your mobile device. |
| **SCS Controller FW not supported** | Update the SCS Controller firmware. |
| **Gateway already belongs to someone else** | Contact AoFrio support. |
| **Gateway is already tracking** | Click **OK** to proceed and override the association. |
| **SCS Controller already being tracked** | Click **OK** to proceed and override the association. |
